Skill drafting at a glance — verified November 5, 2026. Skill drafting is Afterlife’s confirmed core mechanic for the Unformed dungeon: you choose a starting loadout as you enter, and draft new skills after successful encounters. Skills are cross-profession, and elite skills from different professions can coexist in one build. The skill pool, numbers and rarity rules are not published.

The Three Confirmed Rules

  1. Draft on entry. Your skill bar for a run begins with a chosen starting loadout, selected as you enter the Unformed.
  2. Draft mid-run. Successful encounters let you draft new skills — growth happens inside the run, not just between runs.
  3. Draft across professions. Skills are not locked to your character’s profession, and even elite skills from different professions can coexist in a single build.

That third rule is the series-shaking one: original Guild Wars built its identity on tight profession boundaries, and Afterlife deliberately relaxes them inside the dungeon.

Why Drafting Fits the Unformed

Skill drafting and the dungeon’s Unformed Dungeon Guide are two halves of one design: since the map, encounters and boss re-roll each run, no fixed meta build can dominate. Drafting forces adaptation — the best build is the one assembled in response to the run you are actually in. The Best Builds explores what that means for planning.

Drafting Versus Classic Guild Wars Builds

Classic Guild Wars

Fixed skill bar, profession-locked, tuned before the mission, elite skill singular per bar.

Afterlife drafting

Evolving skill bar, cross-profession, tuned mid-run, elites from several professions legal in one build.

Veterans should expect muscle memory to misfire — the planning skill transfers, the locking-in habit does not. The Drafting Explained goes deeper on the implications.

Drafting in a Party

Cross-profession drafting has obvious co-op implications: parties can coordinate drafts to cover threats no single bar could. Confirmed co-op details (friends plus henchmen) are on the Co-op Guide; how exactly party drafting interacts is to be verified after launch.

What Is Unknown About the Skill Pool

Not published, and not invented here:

  • Which skills (or skill types) appear in the draft pool
  • Draft frequency, pool size or reroll mechanics
  • Numbers, cooldowns, attribute scaling or balance
  • Whether drafting differs between solo and party runs

Skill Drafting FAQ

What is skill drafting in Guild Wars Afterlife?

The confirmed dungeon mechanic: choose a starting loadout on entry to the Unformed, then draft new skills after successful encounters.

Can skills cross professions in Afterlife?

Yes — drafting is cross-profession, and elite skills from different professions can coexist in one build. That is officially confirmed.

Is there a best skill draft already?

No. The skill pool and numbers are unpublished, and the change-every-run dungeon makes fixed metas unlikely. See the best builds framework.

Does drafting apply outside the Unformed?

Unconfirmed. Announced materials tie drafting to the Unformed dungeon; behavior elsewhere is to be verified after launch.
